The standard tire size on the 404's was 10.5x20 but many people successfully run 12.5x20 on them with no problems.

The military tires have very tough sidewalls which makes for a harsh ride. The harsh ride will be more noticeable in a 404 since they are lighter than a 416. Will be ok for farm use and short distance driving, but if you intend any long distance trips I'd recommend you consider tubeless radials (even more pricey though...). The most commonly available tubeless radials in SA are Michelin XZL. Nice tire, but pricing hurts.

Mogster recently posted about Pirelly tires he fitted to his mog - may be an alternative if they're obtainable.

PS - if you're buying second hand tires, remember to look at the date stamp on the tires. Many of them are very old and have been exposed to years of sun.

On my first mog I had a set of second hand Dunlop MPT tires. They've never been used (still had the little rubber "stoppeltjies" on the tread), but the rubber was so brittle from years in the sun that big chunks of rubber would break off whenever I encountered rocky terrain. After 7000km I had to discard the tires as they were finished... :-(
