Once in your name, you can also de-register and then don't pay any license fees until you finished restoring. Only then re-register with policy clearance, data dot, roadworthy, etc.

Thank you, Dawie - it is in fact now de-registered, after bringing the license fees up to date recently. I wasn't sure whether one could then re-register, so thank you very much for clearing that up.

Thank you all once again for your advice and support. I sold the car this afternoon for R19 000 which I can live with. Certainly better than R10 000...
