Danie, the front "bulge" is to accommodate some hydraulic pipes (I checked on the one vehicle and the top of the two pipes were already chafing against the bonnet) the back "bulge" is a heat exhaust from the turbo.
I have asked the question about the 12 and the 24 Volt arrangement. The early "Professional" models where fitted with 2 alternators and three batteries and 24V starter motor, the later models have a 12V system with two batteries and one alternator and a 12V starter motor. The 24 Volt option has a 24V outlet behind the middle console, one 12V battery is a dedicated battery for the electronics (this is the same in the two battery 12V setup).
The photo shows the three battery (24V) setup (LHD) against the (RHD).

Thanks Michel, BUT why is this not an issue on the G350CDI? Or are their batteries not located under the hood? Thus freeing up more space below the hood for 'pipes'.

Oh dear....That is not good enough from MB! Yes it might have meant they would have to lower/adjust/reposition some aspects of the engine...but this(bulge) is no good. Looks like it is an after thought solution ....Really disappointing...

I phoned around to find who will be getting demo models in the cape. So the Century City dealership told me that they were supposed to have a G55 demo already, but it was sold to someone in Sandton before they got it. Probably a drug lord.... The other dealership said they don't know what a G is, but they have a GL.........so I put the phone down.

Danie, the 350 has basically the same engine as the "Professional" the difference is in the more sophisticated engine management, only a 12V standard layout, the fuel management and exhaust system (adding the Blue-Tech to minimize CO2 emission). Talking to one of the German technicians, he confirmed that "as long as it takes for you to drink a cup of coffee, we will be able to change a 300 "Professional" engine performance to a 350!" it is all a matter of an electronic "chip". How you get hold of this "chip" that is an other "story"!

Again, how can a LESS sophisticated system (G300CDI) require MORE space?

Michel, the G300CDI is de-tuned for a reason, I would keep it that way.

I have no technical knowledge about this issue but how does this influence the 50ppm diesel limitation for the 350?

Sure thing, the 350 has a different breaking and safety system, ventilated front disc breaks and rear disk against the standard disk in front and drums on the rear of the "professional".
The difference is, as well, that on the 350 the entire engine is covered with a plastic hood while the 300 is an "open" engine.

Michel, in my opinion...less power = more reliability, more compatible with dirty fuel.

The Blue-Tec requires 50ppm fuel and the "Blue solution" that will last for about 12000km. It has been noted by the German technicians that you can fuel the 350 with "lower"quality fuel, but not over a long period. The Blue-Tec was specifically requested from the European Laws, otherwise they could not register the vehicle in all the European countries.
