    Wanted: G diesel Bakkie

I am also looking for my first G-wagen, a bakkie, long- or short wheel base with any of the diesel engines. (preferably in running condition-even if it is just)

If anyone has one for sale or know where else I can look for one, I would be glad!

    Thank you

    Helo

The cabrios i have seen (2) are modified to be a "bakkie". i.e. back panel with custom window fixed (somehow) to floor pan and sides.

I have a VIN number of one I had a look at earlier this year: WDB46032327022947
Interesting; the colour code "3002" is "unknown" on the data card, although it is the same colour as code 1681 - maybe a re-spray. *is the engin bay always the same colour as the rest of the body?

Yes, that red shows where the sand colour paint has come off.

only 12 made, do you know how many of them made their way into SA, new or second hand imports?

including a photo of abovementioned car, the conversion from van to bakkie explains the noisy roof...

    Re: Wanted: G diesel Bakkie

I have been trying to get to the bottom of the numerous numbers of G bakkies in this country in lieu of only 12 having been listed as "official" . I been looking though some reference material including the book "Das grosse Mercededs G Buch " and "Das Neue Grosse Mercedes G-Klasse-Buch". It appears that some three key features make the bakkie different to the Cabrio as follows:

    1. Bakkie has what appears to be a rear air vent at the bottom of the B pillar
    2. The rear of the Cab is vertical and not slanted as is the case with Cabrio's
    3. The bakkie as fixed rear window approx 250 x 600 mm in size

I would suspect thta mmost bakkies in RSA are converted Cabrio's and/ or Panel vans.

    Any furthur thoughts
    Peter

    Re: Wanted: G diesel Bakkie

I believe you are 100% correct. I have never seen a genuine Graz bakkie with the features you describe.

Do you remember that MBSA advert for the G from 1982 which I have posted here before? It shows the pickup with the Schmude pickup cabin mounted onto a LWB Cabrio, and that is the only pickup I have seen here. See Floris' picture.
