Trip report of a TLC through Congo: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...kinshasa-53285

Nothing to do with G wagens but an amazing adventure worth sharing and they are out there doing what we all dream of.

In my opinion, that is what exploration is all about. They will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same trip and in turn and time plenty others might follow all depending on the Congolese attitude to welcome tourism and treat tourists for what they actually are and what they could contribute to a f-ed up country and their even more desolate lives.
I would love to go there!

Re: An amazing trip report through the Congo

    Hi

I have a similar dream for my unimog and have read a lot about the chaotic road conditions in africa and the never ending demand for money. These people were French speaking and perhaps that is why they were harassed. I wonder what will the police attitude be if one speaks to them in Afrikaans will the police still hassle you even if you indicate that you dont understand. My experience with paying bribes is to ignore the demand act stupid and sit it out. Eventually they give up.

Africa is astunning place but the question is does one want to be harrared continously. Eventuall one will get fed up, say or act the wrong way and end up in a african jail, which as we all have heard is hell on earth .

The question is is the so called adventure worth it at the end of the day.

    Food for thought

Once going to Lesotho, in the old days, they where quite annoying at the border post at Fouriesburg, and they wanted to search the vehicle for all sorts of things. I made up that I was a "heavy stutterer" and at the end they gave and up left me in peace!

That is why I am finished with Zambia, Moz. et al. and will stick to Bots. Nam., Swaziland.

What do you do at Manyeleti? A friend of mine used to keep elephants away from the pumpkins there until the Africa you mention got to him and he went back to the US.

It sounds as if could have been Joel Hancock who went back to Oregon . I am still in touch with him and his two boys sometime come to visit me.

I own the the Pungwe Bush camp.

    Keep in touch

    Aha.

It is indeed Joel. He was here twice last year. The boys were both here till last week and we greeted David on Sunday to go back to join the US Marines. Jeremy is in Hoedspruit in an anti poaching unit.

The old SA saying applies again I think.: Its a small world.
