According to Das Grosse Buch Vom Unimog the model 411.115 was only and especially build for the Portuguese Military and extensively used in Angola and Moz in their days of rule there.
Can anybody confirm this? Can you maybe trace some pictures of these?
Have you seen these lying around on your Moz travels or remember seeing them in Angola during our travels there?

The 411 and its bigger brother 404, was a kind of ' workhorse 'and' stick -to -all- to- work 'in African settings where it was used operationally by Portugal. Since vehicle route, transporting food , mail and wounded by transporting troops , did everything. The same manufacturer had a specific version for Portugal , which he called UNIMOG 411 115 and was devoid of any luxuries and absolutely rustic, including in some cases a mechanical winch front .
Serving the Portuguese army , each carrying up to 10 UNIMOG men on patrols (fortunately the Portuguese in the average height was less than the Portuguese average of today ) and its elevated position, and back to back, allowing the military to detect movement in nearby. In case of ambush , the crew had no kind of protection, based on this , the ability of the military jump as quickly as possible to the front ( of the vehicle to the ground ).
This tactical advantage , however, was not so evident in northern Angola , and Guinea, where the rainforest made the progression into the jungle almost closed , a task extremely difficult, and where to be in a higher position had no significant advantages.
With the end of the war , many vehicles were in Africa, and those who returned, or those emcontravam in Portugal, had suffered from the problem that many other equipment from the Portuguese Armed Forces . The weak performance of the UNIMOG 411 made him ineffective , because what could be done by a UNIMOG in Portugal could be done by any vehicle on the road he walked , and with a lower cost. Substitution of these vehicles began to be considered even in the 70s and entered the service Cournil some vehicles manufactured in Portugal by the company " Union Metal Mechanics , "and that became known as UMM, and later cars of the same type , but more modern .
Note that Johan Oosthuysen's Unimog has A winch attached. And a snorkel.
It looks like the Portugeese army models is very basic.
Otherwise exactly the same.
No lift arms, wooden bak.
I don't know where they fitted the spare wheel.
Your Father was very brave. In the Rhodesian War we used to use sandbags under the seats as land mine protection. Also no sides or shields. Even the guy's before me on the SWA border. 1975-1979
