I am waiting for Dirk to work on my G - I suspect my steering box is badly worn, i would like to take an option on your LHD steering box untill Dirk had a look at mine. Can you remember if it had any play?

And no I am not emigrating I have three women in my life with a ferocoius apetite for cash. I told them I would get them new shoes if I sold a diff......

The LHD steering box is perfect - you sold it to me. It was in the CYY Lefty bastard.

Would you know what the difference would be in fitting an autobox instead of the normal 4 speed manual?

I'm specifically thinking about things like revs, fuel economy and power delivery. Remember, I've got a bit of a problem with my first gear on my "normal" car gearbox.

Lastly - in what condition is the autobox? Would I have to spend some money on it?

I bought this box from John Fuller. He had it overhauled and used it with his 280 engine. He then transplanted a 320 engine and gearbox into his G and I then bought the box. I put it onto a N/a 617 ie 300 diesel. with 4.89 diffs. It was sluggish to get going and I couldn't get first gear with it.

I needed to replace a solenoid to get it to engage 1st gear by which time I had the 617 A turbo motor and manual gearbox ready for transplant. I do not know what a G auto box looks like and this one may also be a car one but John did not think so as he bought the G with this box if I remember correctly

I also never connected the kickdown and holddown stuff - I just put the box in, added oil and drove it. The box is in perfect condition in my opinion. I have the torque converter and a short propshaft also. I have made the shifter so that you dont have to modify your G to fit it. You just have to make the selector rod.

Fuel economy wise it will probably be a bit heavier than a manual. 4th gear is still 1:1 - ie it does not give you an overdrive, but it is soooo easy.
