Picking up on Andrew's idea. Seem like Musso's can be had for very little money. Take the motor out and sell body for parts?

Saw one complete for 30k in running condition last week. Must be sold...

Maybe something for you to consider Leonard?

Have been looking around, even test driven a few and the ones in that price bracket are generally cheap for a reason. Had anything from slipping gears to 'rebuilt' with suspicious oil splatters around 'new' gaskets. If I am going to fork out that kind of money I have to know it is going to be problem free for a very long time.. (Spare cash at this time going toward restoration) Dont trust rebuilt turbodiesels that go on the market within weeks or few months after rebuild.

Accident vehicles may be a better option price wise but scarce. (specialist breakers get first option mostly from insurers without going on the market, so, would need to find that uninsured accident vehicle to keep price down)

Imported engines (2.9 non turbo) are not that pricey and can go for as little as R12k minus electronic bits (if any?) .
If you are just after the engine, assuming you paid R30k for the vehicle, the body is only worth R10-13k and the gearbox maybe R5k, so the engine would then cost you +_R13.5k + labour to remove. (All give or take here)

Must say however my father got a 2.9 non turbo Musso two months ago in good nick for R35k with no hassles so far and with every luxury.

While driving myself (and the girlfriend) nuts with all options available considering also that avenue, what, if any, eloctronic bits would be needed for that implant? If, say you go and buy an imported engine without any management or computer bits? I think Alan mentioned a sump modification? And again, what gearbox would work with that motor?

If those missing pieces are expensive then it may pay to look for a good second hand car...

    Just for interests sake?

As I said before you require a 290 sump the sump on the SY motor is totally wrong. You also need a longer oil pump trunk.
Maybe better to look for a sprinter motor and retrofit mechanical pump.
But then again you might be defeating the objective.
