    OM642 Write up

For the G300prof and G350BT owners. Look what technology lies beneath the snout on your G:

Ja, it sounds great and it is amazing technology put into the engine, but the further i read, the further I became worried that something could go wrong, 0.1 milliseconds injection, nano-millimeters injector tips etc. etc. combined with a bad bunch of diesel could be catastrophic, especially without a maintenance plan

Anyway, only time will tell, maybe i am just paranoid.

That motor has been around for about 6 years now and fitted to quite a big range of MB and Jeeps. They should be getting to the end of their plans now and we will see what the true cost of ownership is.

You can't bore out the block or press in new cylinder liners. EPC seems to indicate that the block is a replaceable item. With it only weighing 40kg shipping costs will be low.

The other stuff is pretty standard in terms of piezo injectiors and common rail injection [at] 1600bar etc. It just costs a lot to replace look at 20k-30k for new injectors. I don't know if these are servicable but it seems that less and less is made to be repaired and more is becoming a consumable.

Spray patterns also become critical on direct injection diesels using low lube diesel as this will wear out the cylinder lining in no time if out of spec.

Bring your laptop with you and your diagnostics SW with you when overlanding!

Still 165kW and 540N.m is nice power and tourque!

Yes Riaan in this case there might be some merit in using this in conjunction with a good fine filtration on the fuel.
