    Main rear crank seal

I need to replace my main rear crank seal.
Is it worth it to have someone do it for R4000-R5000, or is it not that hard to do myself.
I don't mind pulling the engine out, but I do mind removing the crank shaft. Can it be done without removing these, as I do understand some mechanics can do this job in a pit by lowering the gearbox.

the wierd thing is i looked at my old engine and I can't see where the seal is, but I am thinking more and more that it doesn't have one. And it never leaked a drop of oil.

    Hi Franna

This is an old engine and it has an old rope seal!

It's going to be quite a tough one to do and if I remember correctly you have to remove the crank to do so. So not a "quicky" by any means. Having said that, I have done it and quite successfully as well (and I'm basically an administrative kind of guy!). I would say that the old maxim of "when all else fails, read the instructions" apply here (as to everywhere else). Mind you, if you read first, it usually turns out better!

There is a very specific way of cutting the rope seal to make it fit, then to get it into the groove and finally to just put a dollop of silicon gasket on the ends of the rope seal to make a nice seal.

    Hope this info helps.

    Regards,

    Arnold

This guy replaced it without removing the crank.

The crank is still strictly removed - from its current position - just that the new position is still "connected " to the engine via the timing chain and piston assembly.

I would imagine if you lift that crank to high (with everything still attached), you are going to cause some problems...

    Anycase, you live and learn!

okey, just wondering! I just can't figure out where that seal is suppose to go. I am assuming according to the diagram here it is no 65 on the diagram.

And I can't see it on my old engine which stripped down and I can't remember that we removed such a seal, and it didn't leak oil. I am so confused!

    Re: Main rear crank seal

A small leak is a relevant answer, i don't know what small is. What bothers me is I want to do R3000 km this December and someone told me that if I don't fix it, it will only get worse.
    What do you think?
