    and Yess ive been told that previous owners swapped engine for uprated sedan unit.

    With a rebuild cost on the OM617 of R35k being out of reach.. Is the OM603 an option here?

    Anybody willing to check a running car out for me in the Centurion area?

    Would be nice if it would make a trip of 1400km although just looking for informed opinion on it...

    Hi Leonard, Although the OM603 is a beautiful motor I don't think you want to go down that road. I would rather stick to a OM617. OM603 are scarce and as you would know its a 6 cylinder and would probably reuire quite some rework to fit. Also I think the gearbox you would then need is the same as a 230GE or 290GD.

    If you still want to go on I'm sure Dirk could go and have a look for you.

    If you have the 230 engine I would look at going back to original. Get a car gearbox and change to a G box when you find one.

    The 230 will be 10k cheaper to rebuild if its required.

    Andrew is looking for a G 300 gearbox maybe you guys can come to an arrangement?

    Correction - Andrew is looking for a 240GD/300GD gearbox

    Leonard's gearbox is a 711.101 gearbox ( for a 280GE ) whilst a 240/300GD gearbox is a 711.202 gearbox. Interface is the same , ratio's are different.

    Does anyone have an idea what it would cost to recondition an old 300GD gearbox?

    Parts could be anything from around R3000 for syncro, seals, bearings to a lot more if any of the syncronisers, gears or shafts are damaged.
