Chris, Just make sure there is no water in your battery box under the driver seat as there are 4x grommets fitted-2x visible once the battery has been removed and 2x under the bracket that holds the battery down. All your main fuses sit down there and once wet the system shorts out. You can actually only see whether the two grommets under the bracket holder have been fitted by removing the cover pannel running below the vehicle and light passing through. I drowned mine in the Moremi driving through lots of normal depth water due to an electrical fault and taking water in through the mentioned openings.

As I understand it the pre-facelift w163 does not have this second battery?

The 2006 models had only one battery fitted under the drive seat.This battery was fitted on two rails and not flush on the floor,and under these two rails were the two grommets omitted.It might not be the same configutation but it is worth checking.
