Move a mog from Paarl to Jo'Burg?

    1963 Unimog 404S for ZAR15k in Paarl

    http://capetown.gumtree.co.za/c-Cars...AdIdZ304682284

Looks a bit mutilated and rusted but .. if I can get it moved to Joey's it could perhaps be made into a firefighter?

Questions: Anyone near Paarl to go look and give me a report?
Who can move it from Paarl to Jo'Burg an how much?
I know this one is a tall question but is the 404 worth fixing?

    Hi Dawie

To start off with, try asking Puch who is on the forum and lives in Stellenbosch, he might have some time on hand... Best would be to drop hom a PM.

There are more part available for the 404 but it is still a mission to get them.

On transport from Paarl... ish not sure who or what would be the best. You can try Eniel Viljoen in Villiersdorp for advice - if you contact the Tourist centre there they will put you on him. He is the Chairman of the WCape Tractor Society.

    Cheers

    Hi Dawie

If you want spares locally, you will normally have to buy a complete Unimog to get spares and then the spares are almost 50 years old. Everything must be imported at great expense, i.e. all rubbers, master and slave cilinders. If you want to restore it with original parts it will cost you even more for example flywheel bolts is R450,00 each. It also shares almost no spares with the other models. Local knowledge of the 404 is also very limited.

The 404 is also not a good donor vehicle for a fire fighter as it has limited load carrying capabilities.

If you want any more info, contact me at 0824519700.

Thanks for the feedback. When I was in the Army Gymnasium, Voortekkerhoogte in 1962, they had a small fleet of 404's as troop carriers. They were very capable vehicles in their own right and we used to take them through the tank obstacle course in Snake Valley. Much more capable than the other troop carrier trucks, mainly Fords (1946 2 x 4 and 1956 4x4 Marmon Herrington 3 tonners). Admitedly they did not have the power and top speed of the later (diesel) Buffels and nobody cared about fuel consumption. Am I mistaken but is the 404's paylaod not around 3 ton?

Anyone with a 404 in this club?

I have a 404 with the 2.8l motor and Robbie has one which he have bought in an original condition. I have become an expert in importing parts since I have bought the 404 and from experience obtained in the past 2 years I have found that only Tony in Durban have spares available. I have obtained spares from him and have imported everything else from the UK and the States. The 404 is very popular in the States.

As for payload it is 2150 kgs with the 2.3lt motor and the 404 is actually the fastest of the Mogs provided you can keep it on the road without stabilisers and with drum brakes.

Peter Sherlock has one down in Cape Town - full running - he is on the forum

And there might be a donor in Mooirivier KZN. Have not followed up lately but was in discussion at some point - wanted ZAR8k for it

Then there is Roland at Koedoeskop NW with an excellent restouration of a 1961 404. Great example of what they should look like. PM me for info.

And Werner Ungerer (Nelspruit), Andre van der Sandt (Witbank), Louis (Nelspruit). PM for their contact numbers.

The Mooirivier one was bought by Tony in Durban. Very rusted and not much spares available. Did see and actually bought some spares in Ponta du Oura. I think there must be more spares in Moz. There is also spares in Zim and Zambia. There is a guy in Namibia that`s got sparesfor all Mogs but his 2nd hand 404 spares are more expensive than new spares in the USA.

The one on Gumtree seems reasonably complete. What condition is the motor in?

Not a clue. Still hoping to find someone to go look. Looks like an old Chev standing on the one side and it could be a window reflection but is there another mog on the other side?
